Best of Five MCQs for the Endocrinology and Diabetes SCE

Abstract

About a year and a half ago, huddled in one of the conference halls of annual diabetes UK meeting at Manchester, me and my fellow Diabetes & Endocrinology colleagues wondered about a lack of written resource for specialty certificate exam (SCE) which still was in its early years since inception. It was a more arduous task than we had anticipated and at one stage almost failed to take off, with the initial enthusiasm fading rapidly faced with the practical aspects of the complex task in hand. Only in the late winter of 2013 when the sun was making its customary fleeting guest appearances, I took it on myself (with able support from my colleagues) to burn midnight oil and give shape to this dream. This book contains more than 300 best of five multiple choice questions with explanatory answers and up-to-date references/guidelines; it is an attempt to provide Diabetes & Endocrinology trainees with real life based clinical scenarios which will help them with the SCE exam besides bridging any gap in knowledge. I am thankful to Oxford University press especially Geraldine and Fiona for patiently guiding me through the early phases of getting the correct format to the written text. I wish to express my gratitude to Gautam, Vinay, and Rao for taking the ownership of individual chapters and keeping spirits high. Lastly, I am indebted by the patience shown and constant encouragement provided by my wife Anu, who remained a pillar of support and took care of little ones while I was glued to my laptop writing/editing the text.
